There are some people whose presence is felt long before they ever say a word. Roderick Young was one of those people. With his radiant smile, unmistakable confidence, quick wit, and generous spirit, he had a way of lighting up a room and leaving an impression that stayed with you long after he was gone. He lived with passion, loved with intention, and carried a faith in God that was woven into the very fabric of his life.

Roderick was born on March 10, 1962, in Highland Park, Michigan, to the loving union of Rebecca and Tommie Young. As the eldest child, he developed a natural strength and sense of responsibility that would remain hallmarks of his character throughout his life. He was a protector, a provider, a storyteller, a friend, and a man who believed that life was meant to be lived fully.

On August 1, 2026, Roderick entered the Kingdom of Heaven, where he was joyfully reunited with his beloved father, Tommie, his grandmother Vella Mae, and his precious granddaughter, London. Although his earthly journey has ended, the love he gave, the lives he touched, and the memories he created continue to speak for him.

A Life Full of Light

Roderick was a devoted man of faith. His relationship with God was not simply something he spoke about—it was something he lived. He openly shared his love for Jesus Christ, testified to the goodness of God, and encouraged others to trust in their faith. His faith gave him strength during difficult times, courage when challenges arose, and a deep sense of purpose throughout his life.

Bright, warm, charismatic, and genuinely likable, Roderick had a gift for connecting with people. He could make you laugh, make you think, or simply make you feel welcomed. His smile was unforgettable, his stories could hold a room captive, and his wisdom often arrived wrapped in humor, honesty, leaving behind a lesson worth carrying and a memory worth retelling.

From an early age, Roderick was active, athletic, and full of determination. He played basketball in middle school and later ran track and field at Mackenzie High School in Detroit. His talent and hard work carried him to an extraordinary achievement: becoming a state champion in track in 1978. Even as a young man, he displayed the discipline, confidence, and perseverance that would define him throughout his life.

But athletics was only one expression of Roderick’s many gifts. He was also a talented and passionate dancer. Alongside his friends Tony and Dewitt, he performed with their group, Funk Explosion. Their talent and energy eventually took them to Detroit’s own television program, The Scene, where they appeared as special guests. For Roderick, moments like these were more than performances—they were memories of friendship, youth, creativity, and the sheer joy of being alive.

Music also held a special place in Roderick’s heart. He learned to play the piano, guitar, and drums, expressing himself through each instrument. While growing up, he played drums at church and later performed with the Detroit-based funk and soul band, Chapter 8. Whether through dancing, playing music, or simply enjoying a favorite song, Roderick embraced every opportunity to celebrate life.

A Gentle and Loving Heart

For all of Roderick’s strength and confidence, he also possessed a remarkably tender heart—especially when it came to animals. Dogs and cats were a constant part of his life, and he seemed to have a natural connection with them. They responded to the gentleness he carried within him, offering another glimpse of the caring man beneath his larger-than-life personality.

That same tenderness was evident in the way he loved the people closest to him.

One of Roderick’s greatest blessings was meeting his friend, companion, and the love of his life, Jeannie. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, adventure, family, and memories that will be treasured forever. They welcomed their daughters, Krashelle and Nakia, into the world and loved them deeply, proudly celebrating their accomplishments and speaking of them with joy every chance they had.

Roderick and Jeannie knew how to enjoy life together. They opened their home and hearts to family and friends, attended concerts, experienced fine dining, traveled, explored new places and cultures, and embraced opportunities to make memories. Yet for Roderick, some of life’s greatest adventures were simply the moments spent surrounded by the people he loved most.

Roderick later welcomed another daughter, Jada into the world.

A Man of Remarkable Gifts

Roderick’s professional journey reflected the same intelligence, creativity, determination, and versatility that characterized every part of his life. He began his career as a car salesman before discovering another one of his gifts in the culinary arts. He became a respected chef, sharing his talent at establishments including Meriwether’s and the Sheraton Hotel.

But Roderick was never a man to stop learning. His curiosity and desire to grow led him to Northwestern Tech, where he earned his HVAC certification. He later worked in manufacturing and ultimately became an independent contractor in his trade.

If something was broken, Roderick was the person everyone wanted nearby.

He was stylish, innovative, mechanically gifted, and exceptionally skilled with his hands. Whether it was a car, a furnace, an appliance, or something no one else could quite figure out, Roderick had a way of studying the problem, trusting his instincts, and finding a solution. His hands were gifted not only with technical ability but with the creativity to make, repair, build, and restore.

Those who loved Roderick will also remember his stories.

Roderick was a captivating storyteller whose eloquence, humor, and commanding presence could turn an ordinary moment into an unforgettable one. He knew how to hold an audience, how to find humor in a situation, and how to make people lean in and listen. His stories were uniquely his—and those who heard them will carry them forward.

A Heart for People

Perhaps Roderick’s greatest gift was his ability to love people.

He was a true people person who could walk into a room and somehow make it feel more alive. He was loved by many and deeply respected throughout his community. He gave freely of himself, offered a helping hand, a listening ear, practical wisdom, or a word of encouragement whenever someone needed it.

His courage was not merely something people admired; it was something he demonstrated through his actions. In one extraordinary moment, Roderick helped save a family from a burning home. That act reflected the very heart of who he was—brave, compassionate, selfless, and instinctively protective of others.

He loved fiercely. He stood up for the people he cared about. He showed up. And when he believed something was right, he had the courage to speak up and act.

Most importantly, Roderick never kept his faith to himself. He spoke openly about Jesus Christ and the goodness of God, sharing the gospel with conviction and encouraged others to know the same hope, peace, and strength that sustained him.

A Legacy That Will Live Forever

Family and friendship were at the center of Roderick’s world. He was loyal, dependable, generous, protective, and deeply devoted. He had a rare ability to make people feel truly seen. Whether through a conversation, a laugh, a piece of advice, or simply his presence, he reminded people that they mattered.

Those who knew Roderick will remember the details that made him unmistakably himself: his brilliant smile, infectious laughter, quick wit, confident spirit, remarkable stories, wisdom, creativity, courage, and enormous heart. They will remember the way he loved his family, the way he cared for animals, the way he celebrated life, and the way he allowed his faith to remain his guiding light.

Roderick leaves behind far more than memories. He leaves a legacy.

A legacy of faith that was lived boldly, love that was given generously, courage that protected others, wisdom that guided those around him, and joy that made life brighter. His life was a life filled with purpose, and the impact of that life cannot be measured simply in years. It is measured in the hearts he comforted, the people he helped, the laughter he inspired, and the love he poured into his family and friends.

Roderick is lovingly remembered by his mother, Rebecca; his daughters, Krashelle (Gilrie), Nakia (Tremayne), and Jada; his grandchildren, Kylin, Deja, Aria, Brielle, Chloe, Dinah, and Joshua; and his siblings, Dominga, Raynard, Andre, Steve, and Tasha. He also leaves to cherish his memory many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives were forever changed by knowing him.

Roderick’s story on earth may have reached its final chapter, but the love he gave continues in every life he touched. His laughter lives in the memories of those who knew him. His wisdom lives in the lessons he shared. His courage lives in the people he protected. His love lives in his children, grandchildren, family, and friends.

His absence leaves a space that words cannot fill, but his life leaves a love that death cannot take away. And his faith reminds us that this is not goodbye forever.

Roderick has simply gone ahead of us—home to the God he loved, reunited with those who went before him, and resting in the promise he believed with all his heart.
